Fjærland, Sognefjord
Marila is a steel-framed house of birch and glass, set on the shelf above the orchard where the fjord narrows toward the glacier. From the panorama floor you watch the light change through the day the way one watches migrating birds, patiently, season by season. Storm-slate mornings warm to ochre by evening.
Our guests come for the roped walk to the glacier edge, crampons and ropes provided, and stay for the slow rhythm of the house: the brown-cheese and flatbread elevenses tray carried out at eleven, the long evenings on the terraces. Stays are arranged as seasonal packages; we send our rates on enquiry.
Rooms and suites
Eighteen rooms across the house, each turned to the light. Rates come as seasonal packages, offered on enquiry.

The kitchen
One long timber room turned to the water. We cook what the fjord and the valley give us across the seasons, no more, no less.
On the shelf above the water
The house was raised on the old orchard terrace so every floor looks down the arm toward the glacier. Powder-coated steel takes the storms; birch and wool hold the warmth inside. Rope up with our guide for the walk to the glacier edge, crampons provided, then come back to the terrace as the light turns.
In the guest book
"We roped up for the glacier walk in the morning and were back for the elevenses tray by noon. The whole house feels like it is watching the weather with you."
Ingrid, Bergen"The Slack Water Suite at blue hour, the tub below the glass, the arm going still. We have not stopped talking about the light."
Tomas, Oslo"Glacier-edge walk in the morning, then the brown-cheese and flatbread elevenses tray. Slow days done exactly right."
