Responsible Play

The gaming room at Marila Hotel is a small amenity of the House, sheltered on the leeward side of the panorama floor. It is there to be enjoyed lightly, in the same unhurried spirit as a morning on the water or a roped walk to the glacier edge. This page explains how we ask guests to visit it responsibly, and where to turn if play stops being a pleasure.

Our 18-and-over policy

Entry to the gaming room is for guests aged 18 and over. Our floor staff will ask for identification from anyone who looks under 25, and we would rather ask twice than admit someone below the age. If you cannot show valid identification, we will not be able to admit you, and we thank you in advance for your understanding. The room is for house guests and their invited party, and it keeps quiet, modest hours in the evening.

Keep it in proportion

Play should only ever be a small part of a stay. Decide, before you go up to the room, how long you would like to spend there and treat that as a fixed plan for the evening. Table stakes at Marila are kept modest by design, but the healthiest habit is still to set your own personal limit and to stop when you reach it, whether the evening is going your way or not. Never treat play as a way to make money, to recover a loss, or to solve any difficulty away from the table.

Take breaks

Step away regularly. Take the stair down to the terrace, look at the light on the arm, have a pot of mountain tea at the reading-room counter, walk the orchard path. Time passes differently at a table, so it helps to agree with yourself in advance how long a session will last, and to take a proper break between sessions rather than playing straight through an evening.

Watch for the warning signs

If you find yourself thinking about play when you should be resting, spending longer at the tables than you meant to, or feeling anxious rather than relaxed, those are signals to stop for the evening. Talk to a member of our staff; they will help you step away quietly and without fuss. You are always welcome to ask us not to admit you to the room during your stay.

Where to find help

If you are worried about your own play or someone else's, free and confidential help and information are available. You can read more at the following independent resources:

Reaching out early makes a difference. There is no judgement in asking for help, and doing so is a sign of good sense, not weakness.
